Fraeulein [Posted by Elle Kelsheimer (Guest) on October 21st, 2014, 11:17 am]

When did Germans stop using "Fraeulein"? I've been told it's very rude today.

@Elle Kelsheimer: I don't know how it is in Bavaria since i'm from Switzerland. But here's what I can tell you:
Fräulein was used only for unmarried women (regardless of age). And since there wasn't any equivalent word for unmarried men and of course because the marital status isn't so important anymore, Fräulein is seen by SOME as a sexist word. That wasn't the case in 1945 of course.
And by today, it's (at least in Switzerland) mostly only jokingly used.
